Iran has had considerable success with mines throughout the 1980s to today. This conflict may reveal if their submarines pose a real threat.
To be an effective submariner years ago required the ability to assess a target ship's distance, course and speed with a very brief exposure of a periscope and properly set torpedos to run either straight or a pattern to strike the target ship. This required enormous skill and was only achieved by nations at enormous expense.
Today, with modern weapons, particularly the wake homing torpedo, the job for the sub skipper is easier.
Iran has a number of subs of various capability, notably 3 Kilo class conventional subs which are very likely armed with wake homing torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and anti-submarine torpedoes.
Let's pray they are quickly rendered "combat ineffective".
