Over the last 4 decades I've frequently recommended folks read:
A. Reagan's strategy document for defeating (not containing mind you) the Soviet Union. The strategy to defeat the Soviet Union, and the document which explained it, NSDD 75, were intelligible, executable, and effective.

In the years since I've not seen a strategy document for the US that anywhere near so effectively defined the strategic situation and purposed DOD.
Since the '90s I've ceaselessly recommended military folks read:
B. “Unrestricted Warfare” - the lecture series for PLA senior officers explaining the war China has commenced against the US which was obtained and published by the US government. This document, even though dated, is essential for understanding China.

And, now,
C. I recommend to all that everyone read the aforementioned (1) Trump National Security document:

I am very, very impressed by the document - and, more importantly, the National Security Strategy/Policy that is defined within it. WARNING for the nomenclatura familiar with defense policy documents – this is very different. It is intended to be read, and understood, by Americans. It is not composed of jargon, euphemisms, it is plain 'merican english. The perfumed princesses of progressive policy will find it repulsive.
