I completely disagree with your analysis that a simple nuclear device has no strategic impact. If smuggled into NY, San Francisco, and LA harbors their detonation would have war winning impact for Iran - that is, regime change in DC. I believe this is a real threat for a host of reasons including: North Korea's shift from plutonium to uranium, the known financial support Iran has provided to North Korea's weapons program, the presence of Iranian nuclear scientists at tests of North Korean nuclear devices, and North Korea's comments last June about providing nukes.

I believe such a scenario is a real and present danger that only annihilation of the theocratic islamist government in Iran will address.

I've included San Francisco in the likely target list because the Chinese would insist (the center AI research in the US) - and it is them, and them alone, who have the deciding vote on the delivery - North Korea is their creature.

President Trump in his typical way is doing the right, if ugly, thing - for the wrong reason, and on a timeline dictated by Bibi and friends. A proper timeline would have had visible identification of Quds and Hizballah cells in the US neutralized first but, what is is better than what could have been.

So, it's likely Iran owns a number of nuclear weapons.  They may be in North Korea.  Some may have been delivered last year.  They were engineered to be missile warheads - Iran has, not coincidently, been jointly designing the long range missiles with the North Koreans.   

It would take some time to reconfigure them into nuclear time bombs, but the Iranian's are very clever at that sort of thing.  Their F-14s were sometimes armed with reengineered surface-to-air missiles.

So it's possible some have already left North Korea in container boxes bound for US ports.  My guess is the original delivery date was to have been just before 4 July, that date may be sooner now.

There is only one winner if the worst takes place.

Iran has had considerable success with mines throughout the 1980s to today.  This conflict may reveal if their submarines pose a real threat.

To be an effective submariner years ago required the ability to assess a target ship's distance, course and speed with a very brief exposure of a periscope and properly set torpedos to run either straight or a pattern to strike the target ship.  This required enormous skill and was only achieved by nations at enormous expense.  

Today, with modern weapons, particularly the wake homing torpedo, the job for the sub skipper is easier.
