Despite being convicted of sex offenses in 2008, Epstein maintained access to campus and was provided with a designated office space within the PED until 2018. This access raised serious questions about compliance with Harvard’s policies, particularly after 2017, when it was unclear whether Professor Nowak followed proper security procedures.
In 2020, a university review highlighted that Epstein had been accepted as a visiting fellow at Harvard in 2005 before his first arrest, a designation that allowed him to have an office on campus. After his arrest, Epstein withdrew as a fellow for the 2006-07 academic year but continued to visit and maintain an office within the PED. Epstein's presence on campus and the privileges he was granted were later scrutinized, leading to Nowak being placed on paid administrative leave in 2020 and eventually barred from starting new research or advising students for at least two years, while his research center was shut down.
